Progress
So... It's been a while.
Actually, on that, I noticed I published the page for this project 98 days ago. It'd be so cool if I could of posted devlog on day 100 but I wanted to post today because I've met a good milestone during development. For my development process I've been trying to create the underlying systems for the project separate from unity. This is so I can decouple unity from the parts of the game that really don't need to know it exists. It does mean that, since I've been focussing on getting these systems done, I haven't been able to develop anything that an end user can interact with yet. It's all code that interacts with other code. This means that as much as I know a lot progress is being made none of it is something I can show someone and say "I did this thing!" without them probably being bored. That is until now! I'm pleased to announce I am finally finished in creating the bulk of the underlying systems of the game.
One of the reasons I started this project is because the scope of my last project was way too big so I wanted to do something more achievable, and I have to say the difference is pretty amazing. In the last project I managed to finish a battle system after a long time of work and afterwards was this big feeling of "Now what?". Starting again and working on another big system in the game felt intimidating, and it was hard to know just where to start. On this game all the different features felt like they were small enough to all be visible at once which made them feel like they were all part of this one cohesive goal, instead of one feature taking so long it felt like an entire project in and of itself. This meant as soon as I finished one feature it was easy to see where my next checkpoint was. It also meant I didn't so burnt out on one task that starting the next one was intimidating.
I'm hoping that now I'm dealing with things that are more fun to show off I can make posts like these more frequently. It also feels like I've sorted out the majority of the coding for my first (closed) release. Probably will take it easy during Christmas, but watch this space into the new year. Hopefully I can release something exciting soon!
